Life Behind the Scenes, Sixthman Interns Tell All!

The end of each sailing season is filled with equal parts high- five fatigue, lingering boat dumb brain and long lists of neglected chores. It also coincides with the end of school and beginning of summer. As the Sixthman team take time to re-charge our batteries this summer our amazing interns graduate and head into the real world. The Sixthman intern experience is one unlike any other, from assisting with launching events to holding down the fort when we’re away at sea our interns see all the behind the scenes action at Sixthman. Rebecca Medina, Marketing Intern

Where do I begin? There has been so much that I have learned and absolutely loved while interning here at Sixthman that I don’t think I can put it into a small paragraph, but let’s go with this: I learned that this is a company that prides itself in experiences and helping people make the best memories, not only for guests, but for its people. I haven’t felt more at home anywhere else, and everyone has been nothing but warm and welcoming. I had the wonderful opportunity to see all of the hard work everyone puts in first hand on Walker Stalker cruise, and was blown away by the excitement, hard work, and pure joy everyone had while working. It was definitely one of the best experiences of my life, and would do it again in a heartbeat. I have had the joy of working with an amazing team (Marketing whoooooo!) that has guided me every step of the way and taught me the ins and outs of connecting with our guests (and LOTS of social posts). Overall, the time I have spent here is unforgettable (even for my friends and family because they have heard me talk about this opportunity nonstop). So, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

Carolina Ervolino, Warrior Intern

Interning at Sixthman has been a great opportunity and I am very grateful that I got to live such experience. Sixthman is not only a workplace, but it is a community. Everyone is willing to help each other so if anything comes up there is always someone right next to you to help. I have always been a person who loves projects so I was assigned with a lot of post-cruises projects from listing the most favorite artist on the cruises to post event recaps. These projects are very used to make the next cruise even better than the prior one; and this is what Sixthman is all about! One of my favorite projects besides the ones I completed as warrior was a Paraoke project where I had to listen to all the songs that were going to be sang on the event – aka I had a private jam session on my own at the office and it was pretty fun! Sixthman has given me the opportunity to intern in the entertainment business, which is something I’ve always been passionate about. I am sure that I will carry this experience for the longest time and I will not forget the people that have crossed my path in here!

Julianna Smaltz, Marketing Intern

These past two semesters of my college career, I experienced nothing but warm welcome and instructive guidance from Sixthman’s marketing team. I remember exclaiming to my mother, “You can sit wherever you want! And there’s free coffee! And people bring their dogs!” The team felt more like a family than a group of individuals. And they let me be myself, making the work easier and more enjoyable to perform. Within the marketing department, I practiced social listening with various audiences in all of Sixthman’s social media accounts. I observed the cruisers’ personalities, attitudes, music interests, and the kind of content they appreciate viewing. I researched high-quality and relevant content–articles, album releases, and images for all cruise socials. I wrote copy for posts, which helped me to tailor my voice into different personalities while pulling quotes from interviews, press releases, and articles. This showed me how the marketing team trusted me to get the job done and do it creatively, which made me feel depended upon and hands-on. From all the differing tasks, I really liked getting into Sixthman’s surveys: I see how they gain precious consumer feedback from the questions they poll, and not only read the complaints and praises, but use the knowledge to make the next cruise even better. Based on my experience at Sixthman, I have a better understanding of how I want to work, what a team should feel like, and the importance of rooting deep principles into a company. Sixthman has helped nourish my love for music and people, while feeding my continued interest in marketing and encouraging a spirit of creative entrepreneurship. Overall, I am excited for Sixthman’s future and the joy it will bring to music lovers like myself.

Ramsey Brown, Artist Relations Intern

I’ve never been one to see myself sitting at a desk all day, in a boring office, with a bunch of normal people…. So when I walked into Sixthman my first day and was greeted so kindly by the staff (and dogs), saw the stage for SXM Sessions, & felt the overall amazing energy, I knew this internship was going to kick ass! Now, I’ve spent almost a year at Sixthman and have learned so much and been a part of so many great things in the process. From writing interview questions for Black Country Communion to casually running into Ken Block and telling him Sister Hazel was my first concert ever, which sparked my passion for live music. There is never a dull moment in the office! I’ve witnessed firsthand how much the company truly cares about the talent that comes on board and the lengths they will go to take care of their artists. Not only does Sixthman allow me to have creative freedom, but they celebrate it and inspire it every day I am in the office. As a brand-new college graduate, it is so refreshing to see such an innovative and passionate company like Sixthman exist. You always hear “don't mix business with pleasure”, but it’s quite the opposite here. Having fun while getting the job done is Sixthman’s recipe for success!

Kelsey Naddra, Marketing Intern

I have been interning at Sixthman for about 7 months and I have enjoyed every second! I have learned so much during my time here and got to meet a lot of really amazing and talented people. My marketing supervisors where there to help me in every way and I loved being able to work with them. My favorite part, other than the office doggos, is having the opportunity to work on the Jon Bon Jovi cruise.

The Word On The Street: Malta

Eight months ago, I joined the Sixthman team. In that time, I’ve been lucky enough to sail on a dozen of ridiculously awesome cruises, but I must say I’m particularly excited to set sail on the first European Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea!

Bonamassa! Frampton! Eric Gales! Larkin Poe! I learned on the 2018 KISS Kruise that Vintage Trouble will, no doubt, keep the party rocking! However, with so much buzz about all of the insane musical talent aboard the ship, I all but forgot about the fact that we will also have TWO port days. Each of these two ports are in places that I have heard of but know very little about.

Being the wayward wanderer that I am, I wanted to know what my prospects were for eating some delicious food, taking in some gorgeous sights, and getting a little R&R in a timely and inexpensive manner in beautiful Malta. So, down the google rabbit hole I went!

Grand Harbour, aka the Port of Valletta, in Malta is one of the two amazing ports of call during Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea with Joe Bonamassa: Mediterranean.

The oh so beautiful Malta!

The oh so beautiful Malta!

Vacation... Leaving it all behind… Getting away from it all sounds great until you actually consider the prospect of being off of the grid in a foreign land. So, one of the first things I searched for in a new town is… WIFI! Always the savvy traveler, I personally prefer FREE WIFI. Luckily, many public places including the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the National Library of Malta reportedly offer wifi to visitors (neither are too far away from port). Don’t worry, you will still conveniently be able to show your friends back home how much more awesome your life is than theirs because you are IN MALTA!

Next up, cheap eats! Perhaps my favorite pastime in any new city is to find a local hangout, have an unnecessarily strong beverage, and eat the finest dishes that region has to offer. I just don’t want to pay a lot for it.  My research has shown that, within walking distance from the port, there are a few inexpensive coffee shops, pizzerias, sandwich shops, and Mediterranean spots that I can’t wait to check out. Also, one thing that Malta has no shortage of is SWEEEEETS! No matter where you are, pastries and gelato are never too far away!

And then a recommended 30 minutes after your delicious cheap eats it is time to swim! Let’s talk beaches! What more needs to be said. The less populated, the better. We will be in Malta during the busy season. From what I’ve read, with a little extra research and effort, finding more secluded areas of beach shouldn’t be terribly difficult. Just ask a local!

Lastly, maybe my favorite things about every port are its… unique offerings! While these are by no means the most culturally important contributions to human kind this island has to offer, they are no less intriguing, to me at least.

POPEYE VILLAGE

Preserved from the 1980’s musical, this “town” can be visited for a fee and guests can partake in food, beverages, and interact with characters from the movie.

GAME OF THRONES: SEASON 1 FILMING LOCATIONS!

Ned Stark confronting Cersei about the father of her children, Ned Stark being de-crowned by said children and pretty much the entirety of Khaleesi and Khal Drogo’s relationship… It’s all here here in Malta!

We all need to get around in beautiful Malta, so here is a quick low down on transportation!

  1. ECABS: eCabs has an apps for Apple and Android that allows you to order car service in Malta. Payment options are cash or card, and business accounts are also available (wink, wink, nudge, nudge Sixthman).

  2. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: It appears that this mode of travel is fairly simple and has 2 hour passes available for £2 during the summer time. They also have a handy Trip Planner to help those of us who sweat the small details.

Lastly, I’ve read things like, “if traveling to churches please be respectful…” which basically boils down to being mindful of other people’s cultures and customs, aaand wearing shirts, shoes, and something more than bikini bottoms when you go into places of worship. Simple enough.

So, grab your sunscreen, maybe a little bit of European cash, and some comfortable walking shoes and ci vediamo lì!

Cheers!

My First Sixth Months: Partner Relations Manager Edition

In one sentence, what does the Partner Relations team do?

Our team works as the bridge between Sixthman and our "partners" (the teams that represent our headlining bands and/or the various companies we collaborate with) to bring the event of their dreams to life!

What are your top three moments thus far?

1.     Getting hired! I worked for Sixthman as a Ninja Intern and then a Part-Time Ninja when I was in college and always looked up to the Partner Relations team during that time. Then I moved to Nashville for a few years after I graduated and got incredible experience working at an artist management company. That job gave me the skills to thrive in this role today. It’s a dream realized to get to do the work I am doing now!

2.     Every moment on the ship. I love seeing all of the hard work everyone puts in come to life. I love acting on my feet when a partner throws us a curve ball. I truly enjoy bouncing all over the ship all day making sure our partners are happy and taken care of.

And sometimes we get to do really silly and fun things on board, like – surprise someone with a bathtub full of ice and beer or be the transporter Chris Jericho’s championship belt across the ship.

3.     Developing relationships with my specific partners. I currently lead the relationship with the partners on The Outlaw Country Cruise, The Walker Stalker Cruise, and The Melissa Etheridge Cruise. Every partner is different, which is part of the fun, and I love figuring out the best way to communicate and work with them to create the best events for our guests.

Favorite ship snack?

Anything from the juice bar!

Most steps walked in a day on the ship?

25,000? Somewhere around 8 miles…

If you could pick the towel animal that shows up on your bed every day, what would it be?

A sloth :)

Final thoughts?

I love my team! Major shout out to Gabrielle, Alex, Darby, and my fabulous leader, Natalie, for teaching me SO much over the past six months. #youhavebigeyes #GabbyWendyandtheNewGirl

SXM RunClub takes Montreal

After our 2018 Spring sailing season, I made a commitment to myself to step out of my comfort zone. I was always intimidated by the idea of the Sixthman RunClub because I was barely able to run a mile without stopping...But, after some nagging/encouragement from my Sixthman family, I decided that I had nothing to lose. Sure, maybe they would run laps around me or maybe I would have to stop halfway through our run and I would end up lost in Atlanta somewhere with no idea how to get back to the office...but still...I had nothing to lose.

As if deciding that I was all of a sudden going to be a runner wasn't enough, I decided to sign up for a half marathon in Montreal in September with three of my SXMRunClub buddies/cheerleaders: Geoff, Jess, and Jon. Over the next 5 months, we trained pretty hard. From weekday 5ks after work to 8 mile runs on the weekends, we held each other accountable and pushed each other to get better every day.

The week before our trip, my nerves really started to kick in. I thought to myself, “I’m not a runner! What am I doing?” Geoff, Jess, and Jon assured me that we were READY and that at the end of the day, this race was just for fun and to challenge ourselves.

Screen Shot 2019-02-05 at 1.26.46 PM.png

Our view from our Airbnb was amazing. The first day when I stepped out onto our balcony, suddenly all of my nerves disappeared. It was the day before our race and our main concern was where we were going to eat brunch. Jess, Geoff, and I did a short run around the city while we waited for Jon to join us from Atlanta. From there the four of us spent most of the day just taking in the beautiful sights and mentally preparing to run 13.1 miles the next morning…

That next morning came VERY early. The race started at 715 which meant we were all awake by 6am to ensure enough time to have a small bite to eat and walk to the starting point downtown. It’s pretty surreal standing in a crowd of thousands of people in a city you’ve never been before. It was practically still dark out and the air was chilly, but tolerable. A huge LED clock counted down the minutes in front of us and the crowd started to grow quieter as they prepared to take off running. Each corral started with fireworks, which actually worked to my advantage to get my adrenaline up because I am terrified of them...and then in the blink of an eye, it was our turn…5…4…3…2…RUN!

The race was beautiful. What an amazing way to explore Montreal! Once the sun came up, the weather was pretty much the best it could have been. For the first few miles we chatted and stuck together, eventually losing each other in the crowd once we were all setting our own pace. Crossing the finish line was the best feeling in the world and unlike anything I had felt before…all those Saturday morning runs and months of anticipation had paid off. WE DID IT!

Screen Shot 2019-02-05 at 1.26.55 PM.png

It’s an odd feeling when you realize it’s 10:30 AM and you’ve already ran 13.1 miles…we still had not only the whole DAY ahead of us but three more days after that! I won’t go into details of every place we went, but one thing that you can be sure of is we did a whole lot of eating. We had pretty much every type of food imaginable from delicious pizza to hearty burgers with sweet potato fries to a super classy Spanish meal where we were the only table in the restaurant. Oh and obviously we had poutine…how could I forget about the poutine?!

For me the highlight of our trip (besides the half) was our impromptu and unusual game of blackjack that we played at an Irish pub called Hurley’s. Hurley’s actually became our go-to late night spot on the trip (mostly for the very intense darts games we played.) We asked the bartender that night if they had any playing cards and all that she had to give us was a deck of Uno cards. Most people probably would have laughed and said “never mind,” but not Sixthman people who thrive on an opportunity to improvise! We played several rounds of blackjack and the stakes were high. I won some dental floss, a mint, AND a pink starburst. (Thank you Jess’s purse!)

I could go on about our trip and how much I love RunClub forever…but none of us have time for that. So instead I will leave you with some quotes and personal takeaways.

1.  “You will never know your limits until you really push yourself to them.”

2.   “Self discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do.”

3.   Having people that will keep you accountable and encourage you goes a long way.

4.  Running/walking a race is arguably one of the best ways to see a city.

5.   “Challenges are what makes like interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” Note to self: Play blackjack with Uno cards more often.
